Concentric circles are extremely useful to create a whole range of business graphics. In this article, you will learn to create concentric circles using SmartArt tool. Let us learn to create the graphic in a step by step way.
Start with a relevant graphic
The Stacked Venn is the closest to the result we want.
So, go to Insert -> SmartArt -> Relationship -> Stacked Venn.
This is the graphic we will use to create concentric circles. The default option has 4 circles in the graphic. If you want to add more circles, you can go to text pane and press ‘Enter’ a couple of times,
Modify it to suit your requirement
The next step is to get this diagram out of the confines of SmartArt tool. Click anywhere on the graphic and press ‘Ctrl + A’. This selects all the elements of the graphic. Press ‘Ctrl +X’ to cut the elements selected. Now, you will be left with just the bounding box. Click on the box and delete it. Now, press ‘Ctrl +V’ to paste the elements you cut earlier. You will get an editable graphic as follows:
You can’t align the graphic yet. First you need to remove the hidden text boxes in the graphic. So, select all the elements, right click -> Group -> Ungroup the Stacked Venn diagram.
Click on the empty space in the slide to unselect the current selection. Now, move the cursor along the centre of the circles. This will help you select all the text boxes as shown below:
Delete all the text boxes selected. The next step is to align all the circles into concentric circles. For this, go to ‘Arrange’ tab in PowerPoint ribbon. Go to Align -> Align Middle:

2.4 Electric arc furnace slag
Among the steelmaking slags , EAF slag is worth mentioning, as its application as aggregate for concrete is gaining increasing attention. Euroslag, which is an international organization dealing with iron and steel slag matters, has estimated that about 25.9% of steel slags produced in Europe are EAF slags from carbon steel production (EAFC- EAF carbon steel), and 5.9% are EAF slag from stainless or high alloy steel production (EAFS- EAF stainless steel). In particular, the amount of the former, that is, EAFC, is expected to rise dramatically in the near future, due to the conversion of many steel processing plants into EAF technology that is more environmentally sustainable. During the melting process of the steel in this type of furnace, EAF slag (known also as black slag) is generated after the addition of certain admixtures (limestone, slag correction agents such as bauxites, and slag formers) in the molten bath of the steel, in amounts between 120 and 180 kg/tonne of manufactured steel.
After cooling from 1560°C, EAF slag becomes a stony, cohesive, slightly porous, heavy, hard, and tough material that appears as a black or dark-gray crushed aggregate. Generally, it has very good mechanical properties, as it is made up of particles with a hard, dense, and angular shape. It has high abrasion resistance, low aggregate crushing value, and excellent resistance to fragmentation. In addition, it is typically characterized by a heavier weight than natural aggregates, which depends on the amount of heavy metal oxides included in its composition and that varies slag by slag. Its chemical composition is principally Fe2O3, CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3, with minor amounts of MnO and MgO. Constituent materials (e.g., scraps and additions in the furnace) significantly influence slag composition and structure, as well as the cooling method, which can be rapid (through water spraying) or slow (solidification in open air). The density of the EAF slag is an important parameter that helps to identify how heterogeneous the slag might be, depending on each steelmaking process. Indeed, it has been recorded as varying within the range of 3000–4000 kg/m 3 , due to differences in the content of metallic iron (ρ≈8000 kg/m 3 ), iron and manganese oxides (ρ≈5000 kg/m 3 ), and the internal porosity. EAF slag typically has a crystalline nature, where the principal minerals that can be detected are wustite, hematite, magnetite, merwinite, larnite, etc.
The above properties make EAF slag a good candidate for use in many areas of construction, including as a (heavyweight) aggregate for concrete. For this reason, gravity structures, hydraulic protection structures, mass concrete, and all other applications in which the heavyweight of the slag is advantageous can be identified as the best markets for EAF concrete. An interesting potential application is as radiation-shielding concrete, as an environmentally friendly substitute of natural aggregates such as barite, hematite, or limonite. One of the first attempts to assess the feasibility of using EAF slag in concrete was carried out by Al-Negheimish, Al-Sugair, and Al-Zaid (1997) , who tested the main mechanical properties of EAF concrete mixtures. Subsequent research has shown that the mechanical properties and durability of concretes manufactured with this slag are well known and are similar, or even better, than those of concretes manufactured with traditional natural aggregates ( Faleschini et al., 2015a Manso, Polanco, Losanez, & Gonzalez, 2006 ). Almost all studies point to the positive contribution of EAF slag on concrete compressive strength, tensile strength, elastic properties, durability against carbonation, chloride penetration, and freezing/thawing cycles ( Arribas, Santamaría, Ruiz, Ortega-López, & Manso, 2015 ). Poor performance is obtained only in the fresh concrete, due to the angular shape of the slag, that could be easily overcome using water-reducing admixtures in the mix. As an example, self-compacting concrete made with EAF slag has been successfully produced ( Santamaría et al., 2017 ). However, most studies show the necessity of limiting the use of the fine slag fraction, which generally cannot exceed 50% as the natural sand replacement ratio ( Pellegrino, Cavagnis, Faleschini, & Brunelli, 2013 ).
Before being used in concrete, EAF slag must be stabilized to prevent the potential swelling that has been observed, which may exceed 2% in volume. Some of the causes of this swelling include free lime hydroxylation and subsequent carbonation, which is acknowledged as the main cause of EAF slag potential expansion, the hydroxylation and carbonation of free MgO, the long-term oxidation of metallic iron from iron +2 to iron +3, and lastly the transformation of β-silicate to γ-silicate. To prevent slag swelling, a simple stabilization treatment that does not involve any transformation of the material can be carried out, consisting of prolonged weathering in outdoor exposure, which should last about 3 months. After this, the slag can be processed as an aggregate, and when it reaches the required grading, it should be sprayed with water for 3–6 days, providing alternate wetting/drying conditions. The reliability of this method has been demonstrated ( Pellegrino & Gaddo, 2009 ). Another environmental obstacle that has discouraged the use of some slags in construction until now is the potential leaching of hazardous compounds and heavy metals. This risk seems particularly relevant for some EAFS from stainless steelmaking that contain a high quantity of chromium. Leaching from steel slags is generally characterized as a surface reaction, followed by a solid–solid diffusion process, in order to retain equilibrium in the materials. A minimization of the surface area of the slag is therefore likely to reduce leachability. The pretreatment operation discussed above is often effective not only to reduce potential swelling phenomena, but also to reduce the concentrations of harmful substances or the high leaching levels of these elements. Water used to stabilize the slag should of course be collected and treated to maximize the sustainability of the slag production plant.
Laboratory tests were also conducted to prove the suitability of using EAF slag as aggregate in reinforced concrete structures, to assess whether its heterogeneity, its high density and its poorer workability represent an obstacle for designing and constructing full-scale structures. The results obtained were positive: adjusting the mix with water reducers, it was possible to obtain both pumpable and self-compacting concrete, with appropriate flowability even in highly reinforced structural elements ( Fig. 2.3 ). The structural response of beams subject to four-point loading was even better than for reference beams made with natural concrete, both when flexural-bending failure and shear-failure were induced ( Pellegrino & Faleschini, 2013 ). Bond between steel and concrete is enhanced significantly when EAF slag is used as coarse aggregate, with a positive contribution for developing mechanical interlock and frictional bond mechanisms ( Faleschini, Santamaria, Zanini, San José, & Pellegrino, 2017b ). Tests were also carried out to evaluate the response of full-scale corner beam-column joints, subject to seismic-like action and gravity, to simulate one of the most stressed regions of a multistory reinforced concrete building. Results in this case also demonstrated a superior response of the elements made with EAF slag concrete, which dissipated more energy, had enhanced ultimate capacity, and remained more intact after the failure ( Faleschini, Hofer, Zanini, Dalla Benetta, & Pellegrino, 2017c ). A single specimen made with EAF concrete demonstrated the most important and unexpected result: it attained enhanced performances compared to the reference, but it was designed with 20% less cement, and a higher water/cement ratio, thus being significantly more environmentally sustainable than the reference. Results were also extended to other test configurations through a numerical approach, demonstrating always improved performance of the joints made with EAF slag ( Faleschini, Bragolusi, Zanini, Zampieri, & Pellegrino, 2017d ).

These results have encouraged some producers to use EAF slag concrete in real construction projects, even though there is still not a standard which clearly supports its use, at least in Europe. One of the most important examples of the application of the EAF slag concrete in a real structure is the basement elements of the Tecnalia experimental building KUBIK, sited in Derio, Bizkaia, on the Northern coast of Spain, which were made of premixed reinforced concrete containing up to 75% (by weight) of EAF slag aggregate. The amount of EAF concrete used was about 140 m 3 , necessary to construct both basement walls and foundation slabs, which were manufactured in 2008. EAF concrete was poured on-site continuously with a concrete pump. Concrete strength evolution was monitored constantly for 180 days after concreting, displaying high strength development, which achieved on average 60 MPa for both slabs and walls. After more than 10 years from its construction, no durability problems or swelling phenomena have been recorded. In 2015, the Port of Bilbao used EAF slag to manufacture blocks to protect the “Punta Lucero” dock and to build the new “Punta Sollana” dock, employing a large amount of this material for building these maritime structures ( Santamaria, 2017 ). However, in the past, unsuccessful stories of EAF slag use in concrete have been also recorded, due to the incorrect management of this material, that was often mixed with the white slag (i.e., ladle furnace slag), which is very prone to swelling when in contact with water. The European standard EN 12620 (2008) considers EAF slag as an artificial aggregate, which can be used for many civil engineering applications, including as an aggregate for concrete. However, no details about the technical requirements are defined either in this standard or in other national regulations. Several research groups around the world are working on the standardization of the EAF slag in hydraulic mixes in Europe, groups from Spain, Italy, and Greece stand out, among others. Other countries, such as Japan, have already concluded this process of standardization, and have proper standards that include this material officially as an aggregate for concrete ( JIS A 5011-4, 2013 ).

The mandala is also believed to dissipate negative energy and, according to some authors, to bring healthy new life to the body. The mandala is now used widely in Eastern and Western cultures to promote health, harmony, and prosperity.
There are many different forms or types of mandalas. Mantras, which are prayers, can be used to represent the forces of creation and dissolution.also represent the seven states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, liquid gas, liquid earth, air, and fire. These objects are then placed within the Mandala and harmony and peace are often depicted in the work.
admiration for the mandala or mandala circles in Buddhist, Hindu, and Buddhist civilizations generally, is based on the belief that they offer a method of visualization that can lead to attainment or karma (a person's record in the spiritual realms) and/or the possibility of a safe passage from this world. The belief is that the circle represents the womb of the Cosmic Goddess and that the woman holds the seed of life and the sun is the father of the solar body. Some Christians believe that the Christian tradition carries the image of the circle in its nine holes or rosaries. The circle is a symbol of eternity and completion.

The tradition of using the mandala in religious rituals is believed to have originated in ancient times when the Israelites were drawn indigo andblue flowing from the belly of the Milkyway rift in a vain attempt to woo their beloved Mother (Ecclesiastes), and became the sash of Isaiah (7:12). Support for this theory comes from a Hebrew tradition ( weakened by intercourse with foreign cultures) in which the artist drew the mandala on the ground to symbolize the healing truth of the mater and the soul they sought to heal-the Christ force. ThisTen resting beadcompletes the mandala, and is the first of thecraft gifts, to the faithful to the Lord.
The second of the Ten of the valuable gifts is the permanent peace, comfort, love, and security imparted to the wise. This gift isoursquisherof the needy and compassion of an enlightened mind (Isaiah 17:15). Christ wisdom is imparted to the just by this divine gift through right understanding and salient actions. This gift is the Squ playback(1 Maccabees 5:8).
Themagicalall-encompassing offerings of the mandala are an engine of worshiping God in the ancient Hebrew culture. The Hebrew name for mandala isphall Zak Join, signifying unity and success. The devotion in Biblical terms took place between God and man, that at the break of the earthly seal, the beginning and the end, the high and the low, the near and afar for in Him was manifested the all of the fullness of the gods (Exodus 32:6).

January is Quilt-A-Long Time . . . What Do You Say.
Alright, the new year is fast approaching and it is going to be that wonderful time of year where all the Quilt-A-Long's start popping up. Now if you have been around here for a bit, you know I love, love, love a good Quilt-A-Long!!! The last one we had over 100 people participating, so fun. So I am thinking why not join the fun. Of course, there will be lots of prizes, wonderful fabric bundles, lots of size options, and yes, there will be one block quilt options (including a giant block. ) for those who want to join but are stretched thin on time )
And since you will be Quilting-A-Long, I figured you should get some say in the designing process :) I decided to stick with a star design because they are always so popular. (See the previous Star QAL's Here) So I was playing around in EQ and came up with a starting design and then changed around the color layout to come up with 4 options. So now it's your turn. Which design do you like?? Do you like a certain part of 1 but wish it were put in another?? Just throw out anything you want . . . This is your time to make your opinion heard ) (oh, and yes, these will have more color and prints, like the last QAL's but I kept them all the same for this part so we could focus on the design)

Recognition, involving weak non-covalent interactions, is an important event in biological systems, participating in the binding process of enzyme and substrate. Following this model, chemists have developed many recognition systems. Constructing optical signal recognizing systems based on supramolecular metal-organic architectures is one of their efforts to achieve fine biomimetic system beyond enzymes. Such supramolecular metal-organic hosts can be formed by the assembly of preorganized organic ligands and functionalized metal ions/clusters, of which the various combinations are conducive to the diversification and functionalization of these materials. They possess large cavities that can provide abundant interaction sites and synergistic effects of several non-covalent interactions and the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of cavities benefit to bind with analytes selectively to construct dye-containing host-guest recognition systems. The defined cavities and predetermined building blocks of metal-organic cages/frameworks also allow for encapsulating target guests and manipulating various interactions for selective binding and recognition of specific analytes. Most importantly, changes of optical signals in these supramolecular systems could indicate the binding of host and analyte molecules to realize the tangible detection. It depends on the excellent photo- chemical and/or physical properties of these host-guest systems. Analytes with matched size and shape bind to the inner pores by host-guest interactions and may promote or block the electron/energy transfer or redox processes existing in the hosts, which would produce special optical recognition signals for target analytes. Host-guest molecular recognition has been considered as an important contribution to the domain of supramolecular chemistry, and it facilitated the development of advanced supramolecular materials.
In this review, we focus on the photoactive metal-organic cages/frameworks incorporating or encapsulating dyes to narrate the recognition process for specific molecules via optical signals controlled by electron/energy transfer processes, redox reactions or other processes within the confined pockets of such metal-organic hosts. The photoactive host-guest systems in this topic can be classified into three categories: metal-organic hosts incorporating organic dyes as ligand skeletons, metal-organic hosts incorporating organometallic dyes as a part of metal nodes, and metal-organic hosts encapsulating dye molecules within the inner cavities. These ways all further increase the diversity of photo- chemical and/or physical properties of supramolecular host-guest systems. And in the confined environment, the photoinduced electron/energy transfer (PET/PEnT) processes between donor-acceptor pair in supramolecular systems are promoted because of short through-space distance, thus leading to quicker and stronger photoresponsive signals. It is also necessary to design the hosts only matching to recognition target for convenient real-time detection through its sensitivity, quick and easy photo-response to analytes. We first briefly outline the potential methods for constructing photosensitive metal-organic hosts by incorporating dye molecules into the ligand backbone or as part of the metallic nodes or encapsulating dye molecules as guests. Then, the recent advances in molecule recognition by photoactive host-guest systems based on metal-organic cages/frameworks through optical ways involving in electron/energy transfer or redox mechanisms are summarized respectively.
